Feds Bust Texas Mayor In Cocaine Trafficking Investigation
Gerardo Alanis, mayor of Progreso, Texas, was arrested March 18, according to court documents filed in the U.S. District Court of Southern Texas. Federal officials accuse Alanis of participating in a trafficking scheme involving more than 36 kilos of cocaine, which he did “intentionally possess with intent to distribute.” The disgraced mayor’s arrest comes about five months after his brother, who was arrested on drug charges in October previously as part of the same investigation, according to a Department of Justice news release. Alanis’ 40-year-old sibling, Frank Javier Alanis, was serving as school board president and assistant city manager at the time of his Oct. 13 arrest. Alanis is believed to have been helping run a cocaine trafficking operation with his brother and others, according to federal officials and news outlets.
